A Home Filled with Love and Laughter
Working at the Foundation for the past six years, I’ve had this beautiful birds-eye view of seniors and Veterans enjoying life to the fullest at Perley Health. Thanks to you, their days are filled with comfort, meaningful activities and opportunities to get together.
You can imagine that in my 97 years, I’ve lived through my share of ups and downs. As a Veteran of the Korean War, I’m blessed to have lived such a full and meaningful life. And I’m so grateful to you for helping to give me such a wonderful home here at Perley Health.

When the Second World War broke out, “Little” Alex Kowbel desperately wanted to do his part, but he had a hard time convincing recruiters in Melville, Sask., that he was up to the job.

Did you know? Each year, caring individuals and groups raise money by hosting events such as a lemonade stand in the park, dart or golf tournaments, curling bonspiels – to name but a few. If you are ready to organize your own event, call Sara! All it takes is a little creativity, some careful planning, and the desire to positively impact the lives of the seniors and Veterans who call Perley Health home.
Perley Health’s Tree of Life continues to grow and we are grateful to the families who choose to pay tribute to their loved ones and the care received at Perley Health in this meaningful way.
Fortitude and Quiet Determination
Alex Kowbel always perseveres in the face of adversity. During a career of more than 30 years in the Canadian Forces, he served overseas in both the Second World War and the Korean War, and suffered a broken back in the line of duty. When his daughter was only two years old, Alex’s wife died suddenly, leaving him to raise four children largely as a single parent. Now a 96-year old resident of Perley Health, Alex is determined to recruit enough players for a regular bridge game.
The Perley Health Foundation hosted more than 160 donors on June 12th at our annual Strawberry Social.
Mary MacDonald and the Continuity of Care
With the support of donors, Perley Health continues to pioneer a concept known as continuity of care: providing access to the housing options, supports and services seniors need to live independently for as long as possible. The experience of Mary and Earle MacDonald illustrates the concept well.
For Claude Chapdelaine, sharing some of her good fortune with others is a simple pleasure. Each year, she donates some of her investments to the Perley Health Foundation, along with other local charities.
